Origins of the name "DeepWork"
Our name "DeepWork" references a popular concept by a scholar named Cal Newport. On a personal level, the idea revolves around the need for uninterrupted time for mentally demanding work. Taken into the world of startups -- the ecosystem in which we engage -- it is equally valid. We've found that most successful startup founders have allocated sufficient time to do their deep "thinking" work in concert with market understanding. Rather than chasing recognitions from press, big name contacts, and pitch competitions, they have a deep understanding of the customers, the market, and how that informs their strategy.
An added meaning has to do with how deep work relates to our own chosen strategy -- to focus on underserved venture capital markets like Florida and its surrounding regions. In these markets, entrepreneurs have the opportunity to stay under the radar for a little bit longer. They face a little less hype and glitz, which gives them more room to build the companies right from foundations up. So in addition to being a mode of operation, "DeepWork" is also a competitive advantage we see in companies that tend to enter our deal flow.
